A celebration to mark the Day of German Unity in a small town in eastern Germany. The exuberant party of locals and newcomers is singing its way through a repertoire of songs and hits when someone suddenly shouts: ‘You colonised us in 1990!’ The situation tips over, a cacophony of opinions, sensitivities and injuries triggers an emotional hurricane. Individual characters crystallise, whose personal stories from the last 35 years are played out and told in sometimes grotesque, sometimes absurdly cheerful, sometimes nightmarish flashbacks. Fates flash up like a mosaic, spanning a dramatic arc from ‘89 to the present day.
The story is based on specially researched fates from East Germany. Will the East regain sovereignty over the interpretation of its history?
Our clown play is about peace and international understanding. Historical personalities compete against each other - princes of peace against warlords. Hotly contested battles are fought out in a bizarre, comedic clown play.
